Approaches

As a strengths-based, trauma-informed, psychodynamic psychotherapist, I draw from a variety of approaches to support you as effectively as possible.

Kitsugi Japanese broken pottery repaired with gold

Kintsugi, a Japanese art form, repairs broken pottery by highlighting the cracks with precious metals like gold or silver. Just as kintsugi transforms broken pots into unique, beautiful objects, our imperfections and setbacks forge our strengths and resilience.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic therapy is a form of talk therapy that aims to explore how unconscious thoughts and emotions may be influencing a person's behaviour. It is based on the idea that past experiences and relationships can shape a person's current mental and emotional state. The therapist works with the client to understand these underlying issues, with the goal of promoting self-awareness and personal growth.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a type of therapy that focuses on changing negative patterns of thinking and behaviour. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interconnected, and that by changing one of these components, we can improve our overall well-being. CBT often used to treat anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) focuses on emotional attachment-related experiences. Initially developed for couples, EFT principles have been extended to individuals and families.  I offer Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), an approach that encourages emotional regulation and self-awareness to help individuals develop more secure attachment styles and healthier relationships with themselves and others.  Learn about Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy on my Couples page.

Trauma-informed therapy

Trauma-informed therapy is a therapeutic approach that recognizes and understands the pervasive nature and impact of trauma. Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?”, it focuses on understanding a client’s complete history, both past and present, to provide effective care. The key principles include prioritizing safety, avoiding re-traumatization, and empowering individuals with skills for healing and resilience.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a type of cognitive-behavioural therapy that combines elements of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness to help individuals manage difficult emotions, improve relationships, and develop a greater sense of self-awareness.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational interviewing is a counselling technique designed to help individuals resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behaviour. It is a collaborative, empathetic and goal-oriented style of communication that aims to empower individuals to commit to and pursue positive changes within their lives.  Learn more

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Sand Tray Therapy

Sand tray therapy is a creative counseling technique where individuals express their understanding of themselves, their world, and their relationships through figurines. In this therapeutic approach, scenes are created in a virtual sand tray, reflecting both past and present inner thoughts, feelings, and hardships.  As clients visually express emotions and explore their inner landscape without relying solely on words, this approach is particularly effective for processing trauma, anxiety, and emotional experiences, and connecting with one's inner child.
