Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)

EFCT is a short-term, structured attachment approach developed by Canadian psychologists Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg. EFCT helps couples identify relational dynamics and supports them in aligning against their pattern instead of each other.

EFCT focuses on restructuring emotional experiences and amending interactions to create more secure emotional attachments between partners.  The approach includes three stages:

  1. Emotional Safety - Identify patterns of disconnection in your relationship and learn new tools you can use to de-escalate these patterns.

  2. Healing and Connection - Work on repairing the foundation of your relationship to promote healing and connection.

  3. Moving Forward - Integrate what you've learned to move forward, together.

Limits to Couples Therapy

Relationships involving domestic violence and abuse, untreated addictions, ongoing affairs, or differing goals limit the effectiveness of couples therapy.  If you are experiencing any of these issues, or your partner is unwilling to engage in couples therapy, consider individual therapy to address your stress and isolation.
